Preheat oven to 425°. Combine cornmeal, flour, baking powder, sugar and salt in a bowl. Mix well. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and add egg and milk. Melt butter in an 8-inch cast-iron skillet in hot oven. Stir butter into batter, then pour batter into hot pan. Bake 20 to 25 minutes, or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
