The Wellness Issue

Welcome to The Wellness Issue. I promise we’ll stop welcoming you to each of our themed issues as soon as we’ve made the rounds of introducing them this year. As our first issue with this theme, however, I’d like to share a bit of background.

Perhaps you’ll notice a preponderance of children gracing the pages of this issue, along with chickens, hogs and farm dogs. This issue is about caretaking the next generation and about the creatures that instinctively caretake us. While we focus on wellness for our families and our environment in this issue, there is also an underlying theme of “children and food.” It began with a collaboration last summer with the Children’s Environmental Health Institute to curate a photography exhibition called “Children and Their Food.” The exhibit was a continuation of their Picture the Children project—a visual exploration of children in their environment. This juried exhibition (a selection of photos can be viewed here, as well as on our cover) debuted at an international science symposium held last fall in Austin, and will be on display at our Wellness issue signature event, a “Children’s Picnic and Real Food Fair,” on Sunday, April 7 at the French Legation Museum. With sponsorship from the Whole Kids Foundation, “Children and Their Food,” will also be touring the country, appearing at Whole Foods Markets in multiple cities. It cuts to the core of what it means for children to interact with and explore food on a visceral level.

The Heirloom Issue

Welcome to The Heirloom Issue. Focusing our winter issue  on food culture, tradition and heritage foodways is not new to us. Last winter, for example, we featured a short history of sugar in Texas, a recipe for Southern Hospitality Punch and a story on the origins of the Texas pecan-growing industry in San Saba. The winter months are a good time for preserving the bounty of the late fall and winter harvests, preparing holiday meals in a warm kitchen and remembering things past. There may not be snowflakes on our windowpanes, but we can relax a bit from the grip of drought and summer heat.

Since we have begun giving our seasonal issues a special theme as an extra layer of focus, it just seemed natural to call the winter book The Heirloom Issue.

What is it about pondering our past that gives such comfort? History informs and gives context and meaning to our lives. We learn from past mistakes, creating collective workbooks with outcomes and dividends. We might perfect a family recipe by repetition over one year or across generations, but we don’t let them slip away.

Passport to Local!

There’s no denying it. There are times when we just love to pack up and go. We travel for work, we travel for adventure and sometimes we travel just to get away from it all.

So why is a local food magazine doing a Travel issue? Because we love to travel and we know that you do, too. Our mission as an Edible Communities publication is to grow the local food movement wherever we are—raising awareness of the benefits and value of local food. We know that when we travel, we can all be ambassadors for this message and honor the local food communities wherever we go. The places we visit, the people we meet and the food we eat at our destinations—or along the way—all present opportunities to find those hidden gems and support local farmers, food artisans, traditions and culture—and bring it back home.

Five Years Old!

It’s been an exceptionally rewarding five years as we’ve grown our local food magazine from 52 pages for our debut issue in the summer of 2007 to this 100 page-issue in your hands today. We’ve watched and cheered as our local food community has swelled as well. One thing for certain is that there has never been a lack of fascinating and deserving stories to tell. We’d like to thank all of our hardworking contributors, our advertisers, our subjects and our readers for making us what we are today and giving us the motivation and inspiration for publishing Edible Austin for many more years to come.
