Drink Local Night 2008 was a huge success. Click here to see photos from the night.

Bobby Heugel from Anvil bar in Houston was the first place winner! A close second was Bill Norris of Fino and third was Ben Craven of Starlite.

Thanks to all the contestants and judges for their participation and all the local distillers for coming out and braving the snow! As well as evreryone else who came out to support the local food/drink movement.

The winning drink False Dichotomy will be featured at the Driskill Hotel Bar.  I can't wait to go by and get one. I took a sip from one of the Judge's and it was wonderful.

From David Alan—We received a number of great recipes for next week's Drink Local Cocktail Contest, and had to narrow them down to five finalists. The judges had a hard time settling on just five contestants, given the total variety of great recipes received. Here they are, in no particular order:

Bobby Heugel, the Anvil (Houston)
Billy Hanky, the Good Knight (Austin)
Ben Craven, Starlite (Austin)
Bill Norris, FINO (Austin)
Will Earls, Gypsy (Austin)

These five finalists will compete live next Tuesday night at the Drink Local Night event at the Monarch*, from 6-9pm. The event is open to the public. Anyone who is interested in great cocktails with local flair should come check out this event; it will be one of the best gatherings of bartenders in Texas this year, and definitely worth checking out. In addition to the contest itself, all of the Texas spirits producers will be there sampling their wares, many with their own bartenders presenting signature cocktails. Congratulations to these finalists and a big Thank You to everyone who submitted recipes--we'll see you at the Monarch!

*The Monarch is the condo tower on 5th St. that looks like it is wearing a tiara

With the recent approval of the new Sustainable Food Policy Board by the Austin City Council and expected approval by the Travis County Commissioners Court, we are joining a growing number of local governments around the country looking for guidance from its citizens to recommend policy for growing and nuturing our local food economy.  Now is our chance to come together—independent food makers and manufacturers, food artisans, markets and retailers, chefs and restaurants, farmers and ranchers, nonprofits and health professionals, home and community gardeners—to advocate for prioritizing and creating value for locally grown, sustainably produced food. The Sustainable Food Policy Board can review and monitor current programs that promote conservation of precious resources and local food production. It can also recommend efficiencies and incentives for improving these programs as well as recommend creative new ways  to bring more local food to our tables. Input from everyone who cares about where our food comes from and how it is grown and made is what will make this an effective and powerful advisory body. Why care? Because locally and sustainably grown food is better for our health, our community, our environment and ultimately, for our pocketbooks. When "we the people" take an active role in government, "we the people" are the beneficiaries. To find out how to apply fior membership on the board, how to participate in other ways and for updates on the board's activities, go to http://www.edibleaustin.com/sustainablefoodpolicyboard.

Tipsy Texan is debuting their first happy hour to the public!

Come enjoy their wonderful creations as well as classic creations at Z' Bar at Z' Tejas on west 6th. There will be no shortage of historic information and cocktail know-how at this happy hour. Enjoy your cocktail and the story behind it with your favorite Tipsy Texans, David Alan and Joe Eifler. The first Art of the Cocktail is today Sunday, November 16 from 5-9 pm. For a preview of the Winter Issue of Edible Austin order an Abbeville.
This is my favorite Tipsy Texan creation mainly because it uses Steen's 100% Pure Cane Syrup made in Abbeville, Louisiana which is very close to my hometown. This is a very seasonal drink because it uses the Grapefruits found in the winter months at the farmers markets. Click here to read more on the Abbeville cocktail.  See you all at Z' Tejas for happy hour!
