Beet Lip Balm

Many commercial lip balms contain artificial ingredients that might be harmful and can actually dry out lips. Using natural ingredients to soothe and protect the delicate skin on and around your lips is a much better way to face the elements. Because camphor is mildly antiseptic, it numbs the peripheral nerves, easing the pain of dry, cracked skin. And beets—which are often used in natural makeup products for color—give the balm a luscious red tint.

Beet Lip Balm

For 2 Batch(es)

  • 2 beets' juice
  • 5 ounces local olive oil
  • 4 ounces local beeswax*
  • 2 tablespoons camphor*
  • 1 tablespoons glycerin
  • A few drops of essential oil, such as peppermint or chamomile (optional)

Beet Lip Balm Directions

  1. Mix together everything but the essential oil in a small pan and heat on low for about 10 minutes, stirring frequently.
  2. Transfer the ingredients to a bowl and stir vigorously and continuously for about 10 minutes—until all of the ingredients have congealed and solidified.
  3. If using the essential oil, add it just before the concoction has completely congealed. Scoop into a small, sealable jar (or several smaller jars) and store at room temperature.
